FM Crnadak with EU reps: Bosnia will focus on path to Europe

Bosnia will gather its internal capacities to concentrate on its path to Europe despite the fact this is the year of election, said Bosnian Foreign Minister Igor Crnadak in Banja Luka on Tuesday, following the meeting with the European Union (EU) member states' ambassadors in Bosnia.

“It is important to have everyone in this country start doing their job. The coordination mechanism is one of the pillars of Bosnia's efficient path towards the EU,” said Crnadak, referring to a special mechanism of decision making in Bosnia, which ensures that all levels of authorities are equally involved in the EU accession-related processes.

FM Crnadak met the ambassadors of the EU member states in Bosnia and non-resident ambassadors covering Bosnia from other countries on occasion of the Europe Day, observed on May 9 every year.

When it comes to the country's European integration, according to Crnadak, a great deal of work is on representatives of the local authorities.

Bosnia formally applied for the EU membership in February 2016 and two years later submitted the answers to the European Commission's Questionnaire as a part of the regular accession procedure.

The minister emphasized it was necessary to put a lot of efforts in sectors of healthcare, education, pensioning etc., while the country is awaiting the European Commission's opinion on its candidate status.

Head of the EU Delegation to Bosnia Lars-Gunnar Wigemark told reporters after the meeting this was a crucial period for the countries of the region to make certain steps forward on the path to Europe. He also emphasized the necessity of carrying out essential changes to Bosnia's legislation including the Election Law and the Criminal Procedure Law.
