Lord Bourne: Srebrenica genocide must never happen again

N1

UK Minister of Faith, Lord Nicholas Henry Bourne told N1 that it is extremely important to continue the work began by the Remembering Srebrenica organisation and to keep the memory alive of the genocide that happened in Srebrenica, in July 1995.

N1’s Esmir Milavic asked Lord Bourne about his impressions of Bosnia and Herzegovina, to which he said:

“I’ve been here before, but it's my first time in Sarajevo and my first time to visit Srebrenica. I feel very humbled to be here, on behalf of the British Government and to see how the Remembering Srebrenica project has such an impact here and to actually come to Srebrenica to see the Mothers of Srebrenica, to hear about the incredible work they’ve been doing and how we need to keep the memory alive of what happened here and the dreadful genocide that happened here, on European soil just 23 years ago.”

“It’s very important that we tell our children what happened here, so there is a lasting memory. But it’s important that the people responsible for that genocide are brought to justice and that we seek to ensure something like this never ever happens again,” Lord Bourne stressed.

His message to the people of Bosnia and the UK is twofold: the relentless pursuit of justice should continue like it does through the work of the Missing Persons Institute, for example. However, equally important is that this never happens again. After the Holocaust, people thought this would never happen again, he said, not least in Europe, but it happened in Srebrenica.

The most important thing to take from Srebrenica, Lord Bourne added, is that it must leave a lasting memory so that it truly never happens again.

Speaking about the Remembering Srebrenica Project, based in the UK, Lord Bourne said the project is very important. He said the project does fantastic work in Srebrenica but also in the UK, to make sure that the flame of knowledge stays alive and that it is passed on and that people are aware of the Srebrenica Genocide.
