One person died and nine were injured in a strong explosion that hit an oil refinery in the northern Bosnian town of Brod on Tuesday evening, according to the latest reports.

A strong detonation echoed throughout the town and neighbouring Croatia's Slavonski Brod at around 9.30 p.m., followed by a fire that was put down about two hours later, the police confirmed.

The cause of the explosion in the Russian owned oil refinery is not known yet, N1's Adisa Imamovic reported from the town adding that the police has started an on-site investigation Wednesday early morning. The reporters were banned access to the site.

The management of Optima Group, the local company that runs the refinery on behalf of its majority owner, Russian state-owned Zarubezhneft company, has not commented yet.
