The relations among ethnic groups in Bosnia and Herzegovina are not tense or bad but the relations among the political elites are, said Zeljko Komsic, the newly elected Croat member of Bosnia's tripartite Presidency. People are better than politicians and politics, he added.

In one of his first media appearances following the general election and its preliminary results, according to which Komsic won in the race for the Presidency, he said he would support a friendly cooperation with neighbouring Serbia, Croatia and Montenegro but what he required from them was “a minimum of diplomatic and decent human behaviour.”

“I can't allow stepping on Bosnia and Herzegovina, it is the way it is. Get off of our back. You will help us the most if you don't help us at all,” he underlined.

Komsic's election as the Croat member of Bosnia's Presidency sparked the fierce reactions of the leadership and supporters of the main Croat party, the right-wing Croat Democratic Union (HDZ BiH) whose leader and candidate for the Presidency, Dragan Covic, lost to Komsic.

Covic and his HDZ BiH claim Komsic was elected as the Croat member mostly owing to the votes of Bosniaks, other people in Bosnia's Federation (FBiH) entity, which these two ethnic groups share and each elect their respective members of the Presidency.

“I will do everything for this country. For each of its citizens. It doesn't matter how they're called if they like me or not. It is my constitutional obligation, my moral and dignity oblige me. I won't be grouping the people, I will take the side of the weaker and those who were affected by injustice,” Komsic said in an interview for N1.
