The 2019 European Youth Olympic Winter Festival (EYOF), the biggest sports event in the country in the past 35 years, will ceremonially come to an end on Friday with the quenching of the ‘Flame of Peace’ in Istocno Sarajevo (East Sarajevo).

The flame will be put out during the official part of the closing ceremony which all the competitors, representatives of national Olympic Committees, Bosnia’s three Presidency members and other diplomats are expected to attend, Istocno Sarajevo town assembly president Miroslav Lucic said.

The ceremony will also include the awarding the winners with medals.

But EYOF 2019 is for Sarajevo and Istocno Sarajevo much more than a sports event. It is the product of cooperation between two parts of a city that was brutally divided during the 1992-95 war.

The representative of the EYOF Coordination Commission, Jozef Liba, said that the Commission has only heard praise from all those who participated in the sports events throughout the past week and that there were no complaints regarding the organisation.

The EYOF 2019 represents a good prerequisite for the development of winter sports in Bosnia, he said, expressing hope that locals will show hospitality on Friday so that the competitors and visitors return to the country in the future.

Vice-director of EYOF 2019, Natko Sudzuka, said there were no errors until now in regard to the organisation of the events and that the entire process went by smoothly. He invited all citizens of Bosnia to attend the closing ceremony.
