Bosnia's journalists condemn Prosecution's instruction on how to do their job

Bosnia’s Association of Journalists condemned the Chief Prosecutor’s statements as unprofessional after she said that investigative journalists should first consult the Prosecution regarding their findings before publishing them.

“We are astounded by the Chief Prosecutor Gordana Tadic’s lack of knowledge about media freedoms and the role of investigative journalism, including the obligation of the press to familiarise the public of all the information of public interest, without asking for the Chief Prosecutor's permission,” the Association said.

Last week, Bosnia’s Chief Prosecutor Gordana Tadic commented on several cases first discovered by the press, saying that investigative journalists should first check their findings with them or the competent police agency before publishing them.

She argued that such findings could upset the public which is why they should be checked with the Prosecution first.

“We are open for cooperation, and I will receive anyone who announces their visit,” Tadic said.

According to the Journalists’ Association, the Chief Prosecutor thus tried to “cover up their ineffectiveness” in fighting crime and corruption.

The Association's Steering Board asked the Prosecutor's Office to bring the communication with press back within the framework of professionalism, competence and civility, taking into account the needs of the press and the right of the public to be informed on issues of importance to the safety of citizens.
