Quashing media jeopardises other rights, British minister tells N1

N1

Lord Tariq Ahmad, the Minister of State for the Commonwealth and the UN at the UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office, told N1 that when one noticed that media were curbed it was a sure indicator that other human rights were also abused.

Ahmad, in charge of human and minority rights, said the fact that Serbia did worse in the media freedom area according to the latest Freedom House report, “is a sure indicator that something has to be done.”

“When I reflect for my own country, the United Kingdom, we, as public figures, are scrutinised every day, we are scrutinised through the formal media but we are also scrutinised though the emerging social media channels. And that is something we all have to accept as a part of what defines the media freedom of the 21st century.”
