Protest against construction of hydropower plants held in Sarajevo

Anadolija

Coalition for the Protection of Bosnian Rivers staged a protest against the construction of hydroelectric plants in Sarajevo, on Sunday, with the aim of preserving Bosnian rivers and supporting the people fighting for this cause.

The Coalition said the “tsunami” of construction of hydroelectric plants affects thousands of people in the Balkans, adding that such projects have an immensely negative impact on local communities which are mostly uninformed or consulted about their construction.

They added that should all the plans be implemented, countless citizens will lose their homes, arable land, drinking water and water for watering their crops, but the biggest loss would be the loss of nature.

The protest which was part of “Protect the blue heart of Europe” campaign was held at the Liberty/Alija Izetbegovic Square.

The campaign fights for the protection of the Balkan rivers and is part of the wider action implemented across the Balkans from July 6th to 16th, under the slogan “Our rivers: No DAMage!”
