Croatia's disposal of radioactive waste near the Bosnian border is unacceptable and it is one of the main political issues in Bosnia's Serb-dominated Republika Srpska (RS) entity, said RS Prime Minister Radovan Viskovic on Tuesday, speaking to the newly appointed Croatian Ambassador to Bosnia, Aleksandar Vranjes.

Viskovic told the Croatian Ambassador that the RS Ecology Ministry is conducting activities on forming the Una Nature Park which would border with the Croatian location of Trgovska Gora where they plan to dispose of the said waste. Therefore, Viskovic said, the disposal of radioactive waste in this location, is unacceptable.

During the meeting in Banja Luka, the two talked about the construction of the bridge on the Sava river in Bosanska Gradiska, connecting the southern parts of both countries, as well as further activities in the construction of the border crossing and access roads near the said bridge.

Viskovic stressed the importance of economic cooperation and the level of RS exports to Croatia, while Ambassador Vranjes noted that one of his goals in this mandate would be the strengthening of economic diplomacy.

Last year, Croatia adopted several strategic documents naming Trgovska Gora, a Croatian town located just north from the border, near the Bosnian town of Novi Grad, as a potential location for the dumping of nuclear waste.

This decision provoked the RS Minister of Spatial Planning, Construction and Ecology to say that if Croatia decides to dump nuclear waste at Trgovska Gora, then Bosnia should also dump its nuclear waste at its southern border to Croatia, near Dubrovnik.
