FM Crnadak raises the issue of nuclear waste disposal site during IAEA meeting

Bosnia is concerned over Croatia's plans to dump nuclear waste at the Bosnia's border, Foreign Minister Igor Crnadak told the participants of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna on Wednesday, stressing that the disputable site is very close to densely inhabited areas and a nature park.

“The Nature Park on the Una River is near but also the Trgovska Gora site is only three kilometres away from Novi Grad, a municipality of 30,000 population, which strongly objects Croatia's intention, as well as other nine neighbouring municipalities which are also in peril,” said Crnadak.

Bosnia had first expressed its concern in 2015, he recalled.

Crnadak thanked the Agency for longstanding support and expressed hope the cooperation would continue.

Bosnia benefited from many projects in various fields, from infrastructural to institutional, and is fully prepared to resume the successful cooperation with the Agency's Sector for Technical Cooperation in order to improve the capacities in use of the nuclear technologies in medicine, industry, economy and radiation protection.

The minister reiterated in the closing part of his speech that possible disposal of nuclear waste at the Trgovska Gora site would carry along numerous potential perils.

Bosnia requested in March that Croatia refrains from using Trgovska Gora, an area near the border between the two countries, to store radioactive and nuclear waste and that it finds another adequate area within its own territory to do so.

Trgovska Gora is located just north of the border, near the Bosnian town of Novi Grad. Croatia adopted strategic documents at the end of last year which name that area as a potential location for dumping nuclear waste.
