Austrian Nobel Prize winner Peter Handke explained to ‘Vecernje Novosti’ on Thursday that he never had Yugoslav citizenship, but only a Yugoslav passport so he can travel.

The statement came after The Intercept reported that Handke was issued a Yugoslav passport on June 15, 1999, at the Yugoslavian Embassy in Vienna.

Austria’s Ministry of Internal Affair has initiated an investigation into the matter.
