Sarajevo Canton Government to hold special session over alarming air pollution

The air in Bosnia’s capital is so polluted that the local government scheduled on Tuesday a special session to discuss what can be done about it.

With its Air Quality Index (AQI) often reaching more than 350, Sarajevo has this year found itself listed among the most polluted cities in the world – even topping the list on some days.

At the session, scheduled for Friday, the local government will discuss new proposals for decreasing the level of pollution and to what degree intervention measures which were adopted earlier were respected, a Sarajevo Canton Government press release said.

“We remind that a state of alert is in place and ask citizens to respect recommendations for this situation,” it said.

More and more locals are now wearing breathing masks on the streets while city authorities have recently cut the costs for citizens who want to use the cable car toward nearby Trebevic mountain to breathe clean air by half.
