Mostar landfill still blocked as garbage piles the streets

Anadolija

Huge piles of garbage have been cluttering the streets of Mostar for days. The garbage has been piling around garbage-bins all over the town since February 22 and waste-disposal companies stopped driving the waste to Uborak landfill because of the citizens blocking it due to health hazard it now represents.

With no solution in site, some of the waste from the streets was taken illegal landfills in southern parts of this south-Bosnian city.
Anadolu Agency reports that garbage is piling around kindergartens and schools and the pavement has been covered with waste on multiple places, making it impossible for pedestrians to move safely.

Mostar residents and activists have been blocking the city landfill Uborak for the past 12 days, saying they would remain there until the city asks the international community for help.

After the police unblocked the entrance into the landfill on February 22, the residents and activists blocked the streets in two places, preventing garbage trucks from entering the landfill.

They want the authorities to find new locations for the landfill because the existing one had exceeded its capacity a long time ago.

If the authorities do not find a solution to this problem, the civil protection HQ will declare the state of technological disaster.
