In a Friday statement, Bosnia’s Central Election Commission (CEC) once again urged decision-makers in the country to secure the financial means within the legal deadline for the 2020 local elections to take place, arguing that the situation is now "alarming" and that the election process is at risk.

The CEC pointed out that it has been urging authorities to secure the funds for organising and conducting the election since the beginning of the year and that failure to do this has already resulted in the local election being postponed from October 4 to November 15.

The situation has not changed to date and a budget for the election is still lacking, CEC said, adding that the implementation of some activities which are prescribed by the election law and the previously determined Operational Plan for the Implementation of Election Activities is now in question.

One of those activities is the publishing of provisional voter lists in the period between July 18 and August 17.

“The printing of temporary voter lists, their packaging and distribution should have started tomorrow, July 4, but due to the fact that financial resources have not been secured, this activity will not be realized on time. The possible shortening of the period during which the public will have access to the provisional voter list may affect the accuracy, timeliness and overall integrity of the voter list,” the CEC statement said.

The institution informed the public that “the situation is alarming” and that the electoral process in Bosnia is “seriously endangered.”
