A total of 798,000 tourists were vacationing in Croatia in June this year, which is a 72.7% drop compared to June 2019, while the number of overnight stays was 3.6 million or 72.4% down, statistics released by the national statistical office on Wednesday indicate.

Even though the relaxation of restrictions introduced to curb the spread of the coronavirus started and the epidemiological situation improved in May, June saw only 798,000 arrivals and 3.6 million overnight stays in commercial accommodation facilities.

Of this number, 156,000 were domestic tourists, who generated 457,000 overnight stays. Compared to June 2019, this is a 37.1% drop in arrivals and a 43.7% drop in overnight stays.

Foreign tourists accounted for 642,000 arrivals and 3.1 million overnight stays, a 76% decrease in arrivals and a 74.3% drop in the number of overnight stays.

Close to 60% of overnight stays by foreigners were generated by guests from Germany and Slovenia, 1.1 million and 715,000 respectively. Overnight stays generated by Germans and Slovenians accounted for 35.9% and 22.8% of all overnight stays.

Most of the overnight stays, (1.8 million) were in rooms, apartments and holiday houses, accounting for a share of 49.4% in total overnight stays in commercial accommodation. This was followed by 1.2 million overnight stays in camping grounds, which accounts for 32.5% of all overnight stays.

In the first six months of this year, there were 1.5 million arrivals, a 77.5% drop from the same period of 2019 and 5.2 million overnight stays, a decrease of 77.1%.

Domestic tourists accounted for 435,000 arrivals and 1.1 million overnight stays, down 54% and 54.5% respectively.

There were one million foreign arrivals, 81.5% down from the same period last year, and 4.2 million overnight stays, a decrease of 79.8%.
