Two weeks before the beginning of the new school year, Sarajevo Canton authorities decided that the first-grade students will attend on-site classes, while those from 2nd to 5th grade would interchangeably attend the classes both on-site and on-line. The elder students from 6th to 9th grade will remain home, studying virtually.

“The classes will last for 30 minutes. The plan and groups will be determined by schools based on the (Education) Ministry's instructions. Schools will arrange the interchangeable regular and online classes,” the ministry said on Tuesday, stressing that the pupils with chronic diseases as well as those living with the elderly and other family members from risk groups are not obliged to attend on-site classes.

All high school students will stay home attending online classes as well.

The plan refers to the period from 1st to 14th September, the ministry said

But, parents are divided on whether their children should start the school in a regular way amid the epidemic or remain at homes, the Sarajevo Canton Council of Parents said earlier on Tuesday.

While some are expressing concerns about sending the children to schools, other parents raised the issue of inadequate conditions including poor internet connection and devices on which the children are following the school tasks at home.

“We stress it is extremely important to design the procedures and protocols for different situations, with the aim of making the safety of children a priority. Online classes should definitely be an option that could be applied at any moment, but compared to the last year it should be organised better and adjusted to all students,” the Council of Parents said.
