Mothers of Srebrenica to politicians: Stop using our pain for political purposes

Anadolija

Politicians across the region should refrain from using the 1995 Srebrenica Genocide for political purposes and from spreading “messages of hatred,” among the youth, members of the Mothers of Srebrenica association who gathered for their monthly protest in the city of Tuzla on Friday said.

Members of the association gather in Tuzla every month, protesting against genocide denial, demanding the remains of their beloved ones killed in the Srebrenica genocide to be found and that the perpetrators be brought to justice.

On Friday, they reacted to threats that could be heard in Pljevlja, Montenegro, after the country’s recent election. ‘Pljevlja will Srebrenica’ was among the slogans that could reportedly be heard from the Serb nationalists who celebrated in the streets.

“Recently there were threats mentioning Srebrenica, implying a new genocide in Pljvlja in Montenegro. How would such threats not cause us pain, 25 years after the genocide and all of our suffering?” said Nura Bekovic, one of the members of the association.

“We, victims of the genocide, would never wish something like that to happen to anyone in the world again. They should leave our victims alone and let Srebrenica never happen to anyone again,” she said.

The women expressed concern about massages of hate being passed on to youth that was not even born when Bosnian Serb forces did what they did in the eastern Bosnian town in 1995.

“Instead of helping us find the mass graves, so we can lay our victims to rest with dignity, some young politicians are competing in sending messages of hatred and deny what the International Court has determined. One day, none of us will be left, but those rulings will remain,” Begovic said.
