Eastern Bosnia locals discover huge rock sphere – a rare geological phenomenon

A massive stone sphere, measuring at least one tonne – according to locals, was found in the forests of eastern Bosnia. For the moment, it remains unclear if the object was man-made or a wonder of nature.

The Luka village, some 50 kilometres away from the town of Srebrenica, is known for its untouched nature but also for snowy winters that often leaves the village cut from the rest of the world. Now, it comes into the spotlight but for this phenomenon.

“Nobody knew about it, we asked the elderly. It is quite huge, measuring about a tonne for sure. We didn't move it because it is impossible to do it manually,” said a local, Ibro Mujic, adding that someone should do a research on this.

“Maybe it should be relocated and exposed either in Luka or Srebrenica. I believe people would be interested,” he said.

The village has recently become a part of Bosnia's National Park ‘Drina’. Its landscapes are unique.

“We have Picea omorika here, the endemic tree species. We have nice places for rest. People started visiting, mostly mountaineers. Many didn't know how this area is rich in nature and how beautiful it is, it leaves everyone breathless. This is mostly untouched nature, undiscovered,” said Mujic.

Besides the breathtaking nature, the village is also home to Bosnia's medieval, UNESCO-protected tombstones – locally called Stećak. A necropolis in the village has more than 300 of them.

“I'm not an expert but we all know these are the graves and they witness that people have been living here for centuries,” Mujic added.

For now, the locals are struggling with poor road infrastructure. The first town is 50 kilometres away and half of the road is macadam. They hope this will change to better in the near future.

Some 50 families live in Luka and nearby Krusev Do village. Only during the summer season the population increases as many come to cultivate their land.
