Turkey marks the 97th anniversary on Wednesday since the declaration of the Republic, a holiday that is known as the Day of the Republic, commemorated in memory of the naming of the nation and the proclamation of the state as a republic.

The Day of the Republic is also marked in many diplomatic missions around the world, but this year with significant changes and restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic.

On October 29, 1923, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk officially proclaimed the name of the nation and proclaimed the Republic. Ataturk was then unanimously elected the first President of the Republic of Turkey in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey. Since then, Turkey has celebrated the Day of the Republic on October 29 as a national holiday.

The Republic will mark its centenary in 2023.
