Day of Defence of Sarajevo marked by series of events

The Day of Defence of Sarajevo is marked on Wednesday in Bosnian capital by series of events. Delegations are scheduled to pay visits to cemeteries and honour the victims of the Sarajevo siege.

Anniversary of the battle known as the Battle for Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina is among the 1990s events that are marked on this date. On the same day, the first President of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Alija Izetbegovic, got detained at the Sarajevo Airport by then Yugoslav police and was exchanged a day later.

The Bosnian war started in early April 1992, and the 1,425-day-long siege of Sarajevo is one of the longest of a capital city in the history of modern warfare.
