Croatia celebrates national football team's success

Despite Croatia's defeat by France in the World Cup final in Russia on Sunday, the national football team's success in the tournament was celebrated boisterously across the country with open-air parties and firework displays.

Public screenings of the game were organised in squares throughout the country, with Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic and Parliament Speaker Gordan Jandrokovic attending one in Zagreb.

There were no reports of any incidents.

The team will be welcomed in Zagreb with a celebration on the main square, where thousands of people are expected to come congratulate the footballers, who have achieved historic success by winning World Cup silver.

Croatian national team have received congratulations from Croatian officials, the Council of Europe, as well as U.S. President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron. Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic congratulated his Croatian counterpart Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic.

By winning the second place in the World Cup, the Croatian team have earned a total of 28 million US dollars, while the French team won $38 million. The third-ranked Belgium earned $24 million.
