Alija Izetbegovic was many things, a Bosniak, a Muslim, a Bosnian, a European and his heritage to us was to be all that. Let’s remain what we are but it's time to be more Bosnian. It is that part that we have not fulfilled, said Bosnia’s Presidency Chairman Bakir Izetbegovic.

Marking 93rd anniversary of the death of Alija Izetbegovic, the first President of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Sarajevo, organised by the City of Sarajevo and the “Alija Izetbegovic” Museum, the Presidency Chairman thanked everyone who came to the event.

He stressed that the memory of Alija Izetbegovic is a memory of a heroic age that was witnessed by many, in which many took part and gave their contribution.

Izetbegovic recalled that Bosnia has regained its statehood, army, the Bosniak identity, its mother tongue, equality and freedom, adding that many things were also achieved during the time when Alija Izetbegovic was in office.

The Presidency Chairman noted that some will say that Bosnia is still divided into two entities, that its army is weak but he added that Bosnia is also an independent country, recognised by the United Nations, that it has one, not three armies.

“Through verdicts of the Constitutional Court we became a constitutional people on every inch of this country, as did all three peoples in Bosnia, but we must work on this even more,” he said.

Even though he died 15 years ago, the leader and politician that was Alija Izetbegovic continues to live through his actions, Bosnia’s Presidency Chairman concluded.
