Election watchdog director: Many things are illogical

The director of the ‘Pod Lupom’ election watchdog told N1 on Wednesday that “many things are illogical” regarding the differences between data in the electoral roll and the Agency for Identification Documents (IDEEA), according to which 350,000 voters do not possess an ID.

“A lot of things are illogical when we compare the electoral roll with some other registries, such as the census of 2013,” Dario Jovanovic said.

“Theoretically it is possible for something like this to happen (…) In order for a person to find his name registered in the Central Election Commission (CIK), that person needs to first submit a request for an ID,” he said, adding that “this means that there IS a number of people on the electoral roll that do not have an ID.”

He said that it is probably an issue of the CIK data not being updated, as it also has a number of deceased people registered as voters, although the institution did review their lists in May.

“All of this needs further investigation, the CIK needs to check with IDEEA to see what the problem is regarding such a huge difference in their data,” he said.

He also said that there is reason for suspicion regarding potential election fraud.

These are not the only problems that Pod Lupom has registered in this election period, when such cases mostly happen, he said.

“These are criminal acts and somebody should end up in prison over it, including the executors and those who ordered those criminal acts, and those who ordered it should be sought among those who are competing in the election, as only they have an interest in such fraudulent activities in the election,” he said.

“The result of such irregularities is very low trust of the citizens in the election process,” he concluded.
