Macedonia’s former Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski said on Tuesday that he has applied for political asylum in Hungary, the Beta news agency reported.

“I am in Budapest and have asked the Hungarian authorities for asylum,” Gruevski wrote on his Facebook profile.

He wrote that he had received a number of death threats over the past few days.

Gruevski has been sentenced to two years in prison by a court in Macedonia for illegally buying a luxury Mercedes car worth 600,000 Euro during his term as prime minister. His passport was seized in 2017.

The Macedonian police issued a warrant for his arrest on Monday after he failed to report to the prison to start serving his sentence.
