EU Commissioner Hahn hopes Bosnia will complete first phase of integration soon

Almost a week after his visit to Bosnia, European Enlargement Commissioner Johannes Hahn said he hopes the country will soon be able to conclude the first phase of its EU integration and get the Commission’s opinion on its membership application.

Addressing the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET) on Tuesday, Hahn said despite some backwards steps the Western Balkans region made some great overall progress in sectors of the economy, rule of law as well as in reconciliation.

Responding to the members of the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET), the Commissioner noted Bosnia was currently “not in the lead of the process” but hopefully the country will be able soon to conclude the first integration phase by getting the European Commission’s opinion on the membership application.

In terms of the government formation, he said, this process is in hands of “those in the country.”

“It is also an expression of democratic maturity that given all the difficulties over the months they can nevertheless form the government,” he added.

During his recent visit to Sarajevo, where he met high-ranking state officials, Commissioner Hahn said the Commission could deliver the opinion on the membership application by end of May.
