Ministry: Solution for Vucjak migrant camp is new location and better conditions

The only adequate solution for the Vucjak migrant centre in the north of Bosnia is to ensure an adequate alternative location in the Una-Sana Canton (USK) for the new centre, Bosnia's Security Ministry said Friday, regarding the recent decision by the USK authorities to move all the migrants from the town of Bihac into the Vucjak camp.

“Unfortunately, all the locations we suggested previously were deemed unacceptable by the EU who refused to finance them, citing various reasons. We still expect local authorities to offer an adequate location after which the ministry will ensure accommodation in the new centre in partnership with other organisations so that migrants from Vucjak could be relocated there,” the Ministry said.

They say the Ministry planned to build another reception centre near the Bosnia's capital – Sarajevo before the coming winter, in order to further relieve the USK area from the migrant pressure.

At the same time, the Ministry reaffirmed Bosnia's commitment to strengthen the protection of the eastern border in order to reduce the number of illegal migrants entering the country and to prevent Bosnia from becoming a “hot spot” for migrants whose ultimate goal is the EU.
