Bosnian Presidency Chairman Zeljko Komsic welcomed the adoption of the European Commission's new methodology for the accession process, which the Neighbourhood and Enlargement Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi announced on Wednesday.

“I welcome the clear European Union membership perspective for the Western Balkan countries and adoption of the new methodology, for which the EU claims it brings back a credible membership perspective. In that sense, the calls and insisting on respect for the rule of law are encouraging. Also, it is important to implement European standards in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Western Balkans,” said the Presidency Chairman.

“I hope the new methodology will speed up the enforcement of European standards in Bosnia and Herzegovina,” he added.

Commissioner Varhelyi said Wednesday that the enlargement to the Western Balkans is the Commission's top priority, with focus on three tracks.

“Firstly, today we propose concrete steps on how to enhance the accession process. While we are strengthening and improving the process, the goal remains accession and full EU membership. Secondly, and in parallel, the Commission stands firmly by its recommendations to open accession negotiations with North Macedonia and Albania and will soon provide an update on the progress made by these two countries. Thirdly, in preparation of the EU-Western Balkans Summit in Zagreb in May, the Commission will come forward with an economic and investment development plan for the region,” he said.
