The ruling Bosnian Serb party submitted a request to the Constitutional Court on Tuesday to determine whether the decision by the Central Election Commission (CEC) to postpone the 2020 local elections was in line with the Constitution.

“We are completely certain that we have submitted good arguments to the Constitutional Court because that decision was made contrary to the laws in place,” said Radovan Kovacevic, the spokesperson of the Alliance of Independent Social Democrats (SNSD), adding that the party expects the Court to discuss the request at its next session.

The CEC only has authority to postpone elections in one electoral unit by 30 days at most, he argued. The CEC postponed the election from October 4 to November 15 since the state budget was not adopted which means there were no funds allocated for elections to take place.
