Bosnian Croat leader congratulates Plenkovic on election victory

Dragan Covic, Bosnian Croat leader and leader of strongest Croat party, the HDZ BiH, said he was convinced that the cooperation with Andrej Plenkovic, the election winner in Croatia and the leader of sister party HDZ, towards European future of Bosnia and Herzegovina will continue in the future.

Covic conveyed a congratulatory note to Plenkovic a day after the HDZ declared election victory in Croatian parliamentary election.

“Based on our previous, successful cooperation, I am convinced in our joint work on the future of European values of Bosnia and Herzegovina as well as the Croat people as an equal constituent people, while strengthening the friendly relationship between Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Republic of Croatia, and working to improve the development of the Western Balkans region,” said Covic.

According to latest information based on some 95 percent of polling stations reporting, the HDZ is set to win 66 seats in the 151-seat parliament, while the main opposition Restart coalition, led by the centre-left Social Democratic Party (SDP), has won 41 seats in the election held on Sunday.

The voter turnout at polling stations in Bosnia was significantly higher than in the previous parliamentary election. According to Croatia's central electorate body DIP, nearly 20,000 voters in Bosnia, who were eligible to vote, cast their ballots by 4:30 pm on Sunday.

Preliminary results issued by DIP at 10 pm showed that 74.12 percent of voters in Bosnia backed the election winner – HDZ.
