Prince Albert II of Monaco, Sarajevo Mayor Abdulah Skaka and the head of Bosnia’s Olympic Committee, Izet Radjo, opened Bosnia’s restored Olympic Museum on Thursday evening, 28 years after it was destroyed by wartime shelling.

The museum is one of the symbols of Sarajevo and was completely devastated during the 1992-95 siege of the city.

Numerous government representatives, diplomats, citizens and journalists attended the opening ceremony.

“This museum, this city and Bosnia and Herzegovina were defended by the sons of our country, some of whom are not with us tonight as they gave their lives for it,” Skaka said at the opening. “Let them rest in peace and in eternal glory, we thank them.”

The President of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach, addressed the crowd via video link, congratulating Sarajevo and mentioning the year 1984, when the city hosted the Winter Olympics.

“The new and better Olympic Museum plays a big role in preserving the memory of all unforgettable sports events and it will continue to do so in the future,” he said.

The renovated museum “will give new generations hope for a better future through the lessons of our glorious Olympic past,” said Radjo.
