The United States will donate 20 million dollars for the Bosnian tourism sector in the next 20 years through its development agency USAID, US ambassador Eric Nelson told a conference on tourism development in Sarajevo on Monday.

The tourism sector was severely affected by the pandemic worldwide, including Bosnia and Herzegoivina which recorded a drop in foreign visits by 83 percent in 2020 compared to 2019, which caused lay-offs in the tourism industry, said Nelson.

According to him, USAID is already working hard with local partners on fixing the situation in this sector.

He mentioned as one of the examples the Via Dinarica project within which the USAID in cooperation with the UN Development Programme has been promoting Bosnian mountains.

However, there is still a lot more to be done, Nelson added.

“USAID is working with the government representatives of both entities (Republika Srpska and Federation) and Brcko District as well as relevant private sector representatives who are dealing with this industry, in order to ensure that the adopted policies are harmonised and satisfactory for everyone. We are doing all this with the European Union to make sure that everything that is happening here is comprehensive and includes a complete audit of this sector to meet all necessary standards at the European level. In order to make the most of tourism, USAID has launched a new programme within which 20 million dollars will be invested in the next five years,” he said.
