The Immediate Response 21 military exercise which the US Armed Forces are conducting together with the armies of a number of countries, including BiH, represents a “message” to Russia, which has also conducted joint military exercises with Serbia and Belarus in this part of Europe, military analyst, Nedzad Ahatovic, told N1.

He said that a total of 27 countries, 30,000 soldiers and about 1,000 military vehicles are conducting the Immediate Response exercise. This includes four countries that are not members of NATO, he said, with Bosnia being one of them.

Countries of the Western Balkans were deemed strategically interesting to the United States in terms of stabilizing European allies and NATO as a whole, “given that the policy of the Russian Federation is aggressive and destructive,” he said.

“So this is a kind of message to the Russian Federation, which has been conducting military exercises with Serbia and Belarus in this part of Europe since 2015,” said Ahatovic, adding that the message is that this is a zone of NATO's sphere of influence.

As for Bosnia, Ahatovic said that it represents a message that “NATO, the US and EU seriously count on BiH.”

“The basis of this exercise is the speed of response and the relocation of adequate American forces. Because it shows the readiness of American forces to act unilaterally without the involvement of NATO allies, precisely because of the Ukrainian crisis, which has shown weakness in that,” he said.

Ahatovic argued that the benefits of the Immediate Response exercise are enormous and include the provision of new military equipment.
