Bosnian coal miners said they are going home on Wednesday, but that the strike will continue and no coal will be excavated, further complicating the situation regarding energy supply in Bosnia’s Federation entity.

“We’ve waited by 3 pm for the authorities’ response. We received no concrete answer from them. We’re no longer waiting for them. We’re returning to our mines but we’ll continue with the workers’ unrest. There’ll be no coal production. We won’t threaten our health anymore,” miners’ representative Sinan Husic said, adding that their protest will last until their demands are met.

Their demands include setting the minimum wage to € 500, binding the years of service, and full implementation of their collective work agreement.

In the meantime, Elektroprivreda BiH power company, the parent company of seven mines whose miners gathered in Sarajevo said their power supply has been threatened as the Tuzla Thermal Power Plant (TPP) is preparing to introduce power cuts.

“The current stocks of the coal mixture for the operation of the heating Bloc 4 are sufficient for two days of operation of the plant. In order to provide thermal energy for heating of the cities of Tuzla and Lukavac for the duration of the strike, the TPP “Tuzla” will be forced to suspend the operation of Bloc 4 tonight at 10 pm. As a replacement capacity for the heating of Tuzla and Lukavac, Bloc 3 with one boiler will be put into operation at 6 pm,” they said.

Elektroprivreda BiH added that coal needed for the full operation of the Bloc 3 is 2,500 tons per day, noting that this amount can be provided from the Banovici and Stanari mines.

“Due to the difficulties in the work in the TPP Tuzla, all three blocs of the TPP Kakanj are in operation. The coal stocks at the depots are sufficient for the plant’s operation in the next 15 days,” Elektroprivreda BiH concluded in their announcement.
