Mirko Sarovic, one of the leaders of the Bosnian Serb opposition, said following a meeting with coalition partners in Bosnia's Serb-majority region Republika Srpska that “unpacking” the Dayton Agreement would be dangerous and would push this part of the country into an adventure.

Sarovic commented on the statement by Milorad Dodik, the Serb member of Bosnia's tripartite Presidency, about the Dayton Agreement being “dead,” saying that these words have just sparked the biggest crisis in the country.

Dayton Peace Agreement is a peace deal mediated by the international community, which put an end to the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1995 and introduced the country's constitutional system, dividing it into two semi-autonomous regions – Serb-dominated Republika Srpska and Bosniak-Croat shared Federation, with the central state government in Sarajevo.

Following the visit by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to Bosnia last week, Dodik said that Dayton Agreement was “practically dead,” and he proposed a new agreement on the future of BiH, which would be mediated by the presidents of Turkey, Serbia and Croatia.

The political opposition in Republika Srpska slammed Dodik's idea, warning that this was only an introduction into a new crisis.

“Dayton 2 or unpacking of Dayton are both unacceptable. This is where our positions part their ways and we will resolutely reject such intentions. I think this is an attempt to push Republika Srpska into adventure,” said Sarovic, the leader of the opposition SDS party.

Other opposition parties in Republika Srpska sided with Sarovic and his SDS, calling Dodik's announcements “the most dangerous attack on RS and its competencies.”

PDP party leader Branislav Borenovic called the idea “detrimental” and stressed this could spark “an immense crisis in Bosnia and Herzegovina.”

The opposition and Dodik's ruling SNSD party recently joined together in a protest against a law banning genocide denial and glorifying of war criminals, which was imposed last month by international envoy in BiH, officially the High Representative, who was assigned with powers to oversee the peace process, impose laws and dismiss officials.

Bosnian Serb leadership strongly disagreed with the new law, announcing a boycott of the decision-making process at the state level, where they equally participate alongside political representatives from Bosnia's other entity.

But, after Erdogan's visit, whom Dodik met as a Presidency member despite the boycott he agreed on with the opposition, and his latest proposal, the opposition warned that Dodik was only opening a new political crisis after another.

Nenad Nesic, the leader of the opposition DNS party, assessed Dodik's statements as “very dangerous for the RS and for the peace in BiH as well as stability of the whole region.”

“This is playing with fire. We won't allow it. We have no intention to take part in this,” he added.
