A few hundred citizens gathered on Monday in front of the Office of the High Representative, the international peace envoy, to raise their voice and warn about the critical situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, demanding urgent reaction by the UN, NATO and European Union in preserving the stability.
The protest organised by informal group of citizens ‘Restart’ is held in coordination with the protests that the Bosnians abroad are holding these days in numerous capital cities around the globe, said the organiser.
Suad Djozic, one of the representatives of the gathered citizens, said they would hand over their demands to the OHR, the EU Delegation and the French Embassy alongside the demands that were drafted by the organisers of the protests held abroad.
“We have been in touch with the organisers of the protests for a month and we harmonised the demands,” said Djozic.
Among other things they demand swift action by UN, NATO and the EU, in preserving the peace and stability in the Western Balkans. They also ask from the HIgh Representative to order immediate unblocking of the state institutions.
The crowd was briefly addressed by High Representative Christian Schmidt, who invited the group representatives for talks.
“These are hard times and I ask for a stronger support for your country and us. I know what had happened here in this city, in this country. I know what had happened in Srebrenica,” said Schmidt addressing the protesters, stressing that he will never accept it if someone questions the integrity of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The protest comes amidst ongoing political tensions that emerged after the ruling coalition in Bosnia's Serb-majority region Republika Srpska made first steps towards the transfer of competencies from the state to the entity level, which came as a response to the law changes banning genocide denial that were imposed by former High Representative Valentin Inzko.
