The main Croat ethnic party in the country, Bosnia’s Croat Democratic Union (HDZ BiH), will boycott the upcoming repeated local election in the central town of Travnik, the party said on Tuesday.

Bosnia’s Central Election Commission (CEC) decided that the mayoral election in Travnik must be repeated because of an unprecedented problem – the candidate who won the race for mayor died on election day.

The candidate from the main Bosniak Party in the country, the Party of Democratic Action (SDA), Dr. Mirsad Peco, passed away due to COVID-19 at the hospital in Travnik while voters were casting their ballots.

According to unofficial information, he received a lot more votes than the next candidate in line, the candidate of the HDZ BiH, Goran Pejakovic.

Th HDZ BiH, however, believes that Peco’s untimely death means that Pejakovic should take over the post.

“The decision of our municipal committee is not to participate in the elections and to boycott this election process. This is a kind of response to the whole situation, to everything that happened on election day itself and to the messages that were sent that a Croat should not be allowed to be the mayor of Travnik,” said the head of the party’s branch in Travnik, Bojan Domic.

He said that the CEC BiH made numerous omissions, “made some decisions that have no legal basis” and sided with those who argue that a Croat should not be the mayor of the town.

He said that the decision on repeating the election in Travnik represents a message from the competent institutions that the mayoral election in the town is only meant for one of the ethnic groups living there.

He called on members of the party to support the decision to boycott the election and send a clear message to the CEC BiH and the public on “what do we think about these elections and the attempt to impose a Bosnia and Herzegovina according to the will of only one of its peoples.”

“I am sure that it was in the greatest interest of all Travnik men and women for Goran Pejakovic to become mayor, primarily because of the excellent program and references he offered in the last elections,” he said.
