A new mosque was opened near the southwestern Bosnian town of Tomislavgrad on Wednesday thanks to the joint efforts of local Muslims and Catholics, who financed its construction.

The mosque in Dilaveri was built in 2020, but the opening was postponed due to the coronavirus epidemic.

Catholics and Muslims jointly financed the construction through donations, after a Catholic church was built in the vicinity thanks in the same way, the organizers said.

The president of the local government of Canton 10, Ivan Vukadin, the mayor of the Tomislavgrad municipality, Ivan Buntic, as well as the head of the Franciscan monastery in Tomislavgrad, Fr. Sreten Curcic, spoke at the opening ceremony.

Dilaveri represents an example of centuries-old tolerance and mutual assistance between the local Croat and Bosniak Muslim communities.

This also contrasts with the mistrust and deteriorating relations between Croat and Bosniak political leaders, especially ahead of the October 2 elections in the country.
