Numerous citizens gathered in Bosnia’s capital, Sarajevo, on Friday to express solidarity with the people of Ukraine as Russian forces are advancing toward Kyiv.

‘Sarajevo understands’, ‘Learn from the Sarajevo experience’, ‘We stand with Ukraine’ are some of the messages on the placards citizens are carrying.

The director of Sarajevo’s famous War Childhood Museum, Jasminko Halilovic, also attended the gathering.

“The War Childhood Museum has an office in Kyiv and we are currently working on the evacuation of our employees. It is very difficult for me to speak about this – but I am really proud of my city which expresses solidarity with the citizens of Kyiv and Ukraine,” he said.

He also welcomed the fact that Sarajevo’s City Hall was illuminated in the colours of the Ukrainian flag the previous evening.

“I think it is extremely important – Sarajevo, as the last capital city in Europe to be destroyed by similar barbarians who are now destroying Kyiv and other European cities – must send such messages. This is the least we can do,” Halilovic said.
