Citizens gathered in front of Bosnia’s Court and Prosecutor's Office to protest over what they say is the ineffectiveness to prosecute major corruption cases and political influence in the judiciary.

“The judiciary is under the influence of political parties,” one of the protesters, Mustafa Cehic, said, adding that he lost confidence in the judiciary.

“The judiciary has been reduced to punishing the poor over issues regarding communal services because they don’t even have enough money for food, let alone utilities. The judiciary is the evil of this country, because if it cannot prosecute anyone for corruption, which we are the global leaders in, then everything is clear,” he said.

One of the demands of the NGO Restart BiH, which organized the protests, is the urgent introduction of a special team of foreign experts as consultants at the Disciplinary Prosecutor’s department because “it is more than obvious that disciplinary procedures that should be corrective when it comes to judges and prosecutors are completely ineffective and under the control of politicians.”

One of the organisers, Suad Djozic, said that the major perpetrators of corruption in Bosnia do not end up in prisons as in other countries.

“The processes take a long time, cost us a lot and they are eventually released,” he said.
The protesters also demand changes to the criteria when electing judges and prosecutors so that those who are professional and not those who benefit political parties are elected.
