Based on a proposal by Mayor Fuad Kasumovic, the City Council in Zenica adopted a decision on taking over the building of the ‘Zenica Synagogue’, officially a national cultural monument, from the public institution 'Museum of the City of Zenica' and making it available for use to Bosnia's Jewish Community.

The decision was supported by the Museum of the City of Zenica, which has been managing this facility since 1968.

The history of Jews living in Zenica and their contribution to the overall development of the city is well known.

Kasumovic called it a “historic” decision, explaining that the restitution of such buildings is unfortunately not regulated in the law so the city will remain the official owner of the Zenica Synagogue.

“In this way, we sent a message of unity, given that the decision was made unanimously, but also that Zenica has always been and remains a multiethnic city,” he said.

The building of the “Synagogue” was built in 1903, designed by the engineer Milos Komadina. It was reconstructed in 2011.
