The European Commission shares the urgency of resolving the ongoing political stalemate in BiH and bringing to an immediate end all unacceptable initiatives, which are questioning the country’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity, the Commission told N1 Wednesday commenting on Great Britain’s decision to implement sanctions against Bosnia’s Presidency member Milorad Dodik and Republika Srpska entity President Zeljka Cvijanovic on Monday.
“While we refrain from commenting the decisions of third countries, we share the urgency of resolving the ongoing political stalemate and bringing to an immediate end all unacceptable initiatives, which are questioning the country’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity. The current political crisis is putting at stake the stability and prosperity of the country, but also Bosnia and Herzegovina’s entire EU integration process and future within the EU,” the Commission said.
They noted that the EU continues to engage to promote a resolution of the situation through dialogue allowing the country to refocus on a constructive agenda, in line with its EU perspective.
“High Representative Josep Borrell was in Sarajevo last month. HRVP Borrell has been very clear that the EU will not shy away from using all the instruments in its toolbox, including the existing EU sanctions framework and a review of the overall EU assistance. Commissioner Várhelyi has also stressed that, to fully benefit from EU cooperation and funds, Bosnia and Herzegovina needs fully-functioning state institutions,” they added.
The Commission warned that under the current crisis, the country risks losing major investments.
In this respect two important infrastructure projects under the Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF) located in the Republika Srpska are currently suspended and will go ahead only after the end of the current political crisis and the return to full functioning of the State institutions, the Commission concluded.
