EU Parliament adopts resolution granting Ukraine and Moldova candidate status

N1

Members of the European Parliament adopted a resolution by a majority of votes Thursday, calling on the heads of state and government to grant Ukraine and Moldova candidate status without delay.

The resolution was supported by 529 deputies, 45 were against and 14 abstained.

The text of the resolution states that the parliament called on “the leaders of the countries and governments who will meet today and tomorrow within the European Council to grant candidate status to Ukraine and Moldova without delay.”

Parliament called for a similar decision when it comes to Georgia, but only after the country's authorities “meet the stated priorities in the opinion of the European Commission”.

The European Commission proposed last week that Ukraine and Moldova receive candidate status if they meet a number of preconditions before the start of integration talks. Georgia was not listed among the proposed states at the time.
