EU Spec Rep, High Rep welcome decision on renaming streets in Mostar

Following a Mostar City Council vote, the local streets that were named after Mile Budak, Ante Vokic, Mladen Lorkovic, Rafael Boban, Djuro Spuzevic, Jure Francetic, and Ivo Zelenika are being renamed.
High Representative Christian Schmidt, who is tasked with overseeing the civilian implementation of the Dayton Peace Agreement in BiH, welcomed the decision to “remove controversial street names linked to WW2 NDH ideologies and to find suitable new names that transcend divisions and inspire a sense of pride in every citizen of Mostar.”

He also called upon other cities and municipalities in BiH that also have controversial street names or names of public institutions, to do the same.

The Head of the EU’s Delegation in Bosnia, Johann Sattler, congratulated city authorities for adopting the decision.

“I warmly welcome today’s decision in Mostar to rename five streets, which are currently named after Ustasa & Nazi collaborators. This is a good step forward in building an inclusive, welcoming city. I congratulate Mayor Kordic and the City Council for this important decision,” he wrote on Twitter.
