Charles Michel, the European Council President, honoured the Srebrenica genocide victims in a message on the 26th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide, calling it "the worst act of mass killing in Europe since the Second World War."

“And today is a solemn day. It is a day to remember. And today we pay our respects to the families and the loved ones of the victims,” said the EU's official in a video message shared on social networks.

“We are united in our sorrow. But also in our hope to never see such atrocities in Europe again. And that is what our European Union stands for. democratic principles. Freedoms. Reconciliation. And building lasting peace on our continent. And building a better future for our children,” he said.

“The European Union stands by you Bosnia and Herzegovina. You can always count on our support and our friendship.”

Nineteen more victims of the Srebrenica massacre, which two international courts ruled was an act of genocide, will be buried on Sunday with thousands more victims who were found and identified in the past years.

The youngest among them will be Azmir Osmanovic who was 16 at the moment of his death in 1995.
