The High Representative of the international community in Bosnia said that, due to other obligations, he will not be able to grant the request of lawmakers in Bosnia’s Federation (FBiH) entity who wanted him to speak about his potential decision to impose electoral reform in the country at a parliament session on Tuesday.

Last week, N1 broke the story that, according to diplomatic sources, High Representative Christian Schmidt plans to use his ‘Bonn Powers’ to impose measures to secure the re-functioning of Bosnia’s Federation (FBiH) by August 1. The draft decision contains changes to the Election Law.

While Schmidt’s plan was welcomed by Bosnian Croat political parties, most notably the Croat Democratic Union (HDZ BiH), opponents argue the changes would lead to further systematic divisions in the country based on ethnicity.

Scores of BiH citizens gathered for a massive protest in front of the Office of the High Representative (OHR) on Monday and Tuesday, demanding that Schmidt gives up on the plan.

The FBiH House of Representatives MPs asked Schmidt to speak at a FBiH parliament session about the issue.

The OHR told N1 that, “with respect for the invitation and importance of the Parliament, however, due to circumstances and other obligations, he (Schmidt) will not be able to attend the session, and expresses his willingness to cooperate and meet on another occasion”.
