The first group of soldiers Germany is sending to Bosnia and Herzegovina to join the European Union’s Operation Althea arrived in the country on Monday.
In July, the German parliament approved the deployment of German soldiers in BiH.
“EUFOR is pleased to announce the arrival of the German military contingent to Operation Althea. This brings the number of nations contributing to the mission up to 20. Our German colleagues have arrived today, and the rest will arrive on a phased basis. Up to 50 troops have been approved for deployment to the mission,” said EUFOR Spokesperson, Catherine Smyth.
Germany’s Foreign Affairs Ministry and Defense Ministry cited the tense political situation and Russia’s influence as reasons for the country sending its soldiers to BiH.
