No dissolution based on ethnic lines in the Western Balkans makes sense and the majority in the EU would not support such a thing, Josip Juratovic, a member of the Bundestag, told N1’s Amir Zukic Wednesday evening.
He pointed out that the right-wingers who represent such an idea represent five or six countries and that they do not play any role in the European Union as far as the majority is concerned.
“Such a story in the European Union has no chance today or in the future,” Juratovic said at the beginning of the conversation for N1, talking about “new borders” in the Balkans.
The story became the focus of the attention after the Bosnian Croat member of the tripartite Presidency Zeljko Komsic told the press that Borut Pahor asked the Presidency members during his recent visit to Sarajevo if a “peaceful dissolution” of Bosnia and Herzegovina was possible.
Following this information, some Slovenian media outlets wrote that Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Jansa allegedly sent a non-paper document to Brussels and which speaks about redrawing of borders in the Western Balkans.
“If the Western Balkan countries have serious intentions of joining the European Union, then they have to respect the rules of the game in the European Union. Any divisions in the Western Balkans along ethnic lines do not make any sense, and in any case, the European Union will not support it in the vast majority,” the German politician said.
He added that Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Jansa represents himself in the whole story. According to Juratovic, he knows nothing about the non-paper and that it is therefore not so important.
“He acts primarily on his own behalf because he personally handed over that non-paper. It is not known to me personally nor is it that important. In any case, such an idea is dangerous and toxic for the region. The borders in the Balkans cannot be changed peacefully,” he stressed.
The German politician called such topics “discussions from the middle ages.”
Speaking about the talks regarding amendments to Bosnia’s Election Law he said that the three main ethnic-oriented parties, the Bosniak Democratic Action Party (SDA), Croat Democratic Union (HDZ BiH) and the Serb – Alliance of Independent Social Democrats (SNSD), can not be the only ones discussing such an important topic.
“Neither the HDZ, SNSD nor any single national leader or national party can decide on this, but all parties and a much wider circle. But the three national parties and party leaders have been doing just that this whole time to ensure their very existence. HDZ’s Dragan Covic, SDA’s Bakir Izetbegovic and the SNSD’s Milorad Dodik will have to give in,” Juratovic stressed.
“HDZ, SNSD, not a single national leader, national parties, but all parties and wider circles can decide on the Election Law. You do it all the time, three national parties, national leaders to ensure their very existence. Covic, Dodik and Izetbegovic will also have to give in “, said the guest in Pressing on N1.
In his opinion – there is no need for Dayton 2, either.
“Someone should explain to me where does this agreement prevent people from being human, sticking to moral and ethical principles. There is no need to change the Dayton Peace Agreement, and to start over with the Dayton 2. They must see how this Constitution can be developed to be more democratic so that BiH has no obstacles to joining the EU,” he concluded.
