Granting the EU candidate status for Bosnia and Herzegovina under the circumstances that the country is in today would not be in the interest of the state or the citizens, political scientist Denis Carkadzic told N1.

Explaining his statement, Carkadzic recalled of the decisions that entity parliament of Bosnia's Serb-majority part, Republika Srpska, passed in December last year, aimed at formation of parallel institutions at the entity level as well as of threats of blocking the October elections. By granting Bosnia the candidate status, the European Union would legitimise such situation, he stressed.

“Until the authorities are formed at all levels and threats from Republika Srpska removed, there is no sense in granting us the candidate status,” said Carkadzic.

He directly accused two political parties for all the blocked processes in Bosnia and Herzegovina – the SNSD and the HDZ BiH.

“Imagine we get the candidate status. Those forces would get the wind in their sails and win the elections based on the candidate status,” he said.

Commenting on the recent meeting of the Bosnian political leaders with the EU officials in Brussels, Carkadzic said that what was adopted was “affirmative,” but he was skeptical of any of it being implemented.

“It is good that they adopted to start talks as soon as the authorities are formed following the elections. And we know how one part of the political establishment refers towards the signed agreements, even the court decisions,” he noted.

According to him a true policy of Milorad Dodik, the Serb member of Bosnia's three-member Presidency, was seen following the Brussels meeting.

“I think he will hardly be able to get back on any other track. He said yesterday that if we don't get candidate status, the signed paper in Brussels is not valid. I did not even hope that Dodik would seriously approach the implementation of what was agreed in Brussels,” he said.

As for the absence of HDZ BiH leader Dragan Covic at the Brussels meeting, Carkadzic said that the agreement was still valid without him and that this was “Covic's own problem.”

“Whoever is announcing problems, I think they will have problems themselves,” he added.
