International community's High Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina Christian Schmidt will impose changes to the Election Law on Sunday evening, on the day when general elections were held in the country, learns N1 from diplomatic sources.

Schmidt passed the first decision regarding the Election Law on July 27 this year, although different from the one that was planned, which N1 exclusively carried on July 20, 2020. After he introduced technical changes to the law, the international envoy gave the politicians in Bosnia and Herzegovina a six week deadline to come to an agreement on the electoral reform, which did not happen.

N1 learns that Schmidt will impose partially modified changes compared to those initially planned.

The Office of the High Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina was introduced in 1995 to oversee the implementation of the peace agreement. Two years later, the High Representative was granted special powers, so-called Bonn powers, which allow the official to imposed laws and dismiss officials.

Schmidt, who assumed office in August 2021, has already used the Bonn powers on several occasions.
