Hungary opposes the idea of the European Union imposing sanctions on democratically elected leaders in the Western Balkans, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto told Milorad Dodik, one of the three members of Bosnia’s Presidency, in a phone conversation on Sunday.

Szijjarto wrote on Facebook that he had a phone conversation with Dodik as part of the preparations for the meeting of foreign ministers in Brussels on Monday, where the situation in BiH will also be discussed.

“We have reaffirmed our commitment to the country's territorial integrity and respect for international agreements, including the Dayton Accords,” Szijjarto said.

He said that there are enough tensions at the moment and that Hungary continues to appeal to the EU to stop threatening democratically elected leaders in the Western Balkans with sanctions and to rather engage in dialogue with them.

“The policy of sanctions has failed, it only encourages hostility. Instead, the European integration of the Western Balkans must be accelerated and that will be the right solution,” Szijjarto wrote on Facebook.

He added that peace and stability in the Western Balkans is a fundamental national interest of Hungary.
